He retired from US Army active duty as a lieutenant colonel in the Corps of Engineers after 26 years of active duty. He retired from the University of Missouri System after sixteen years of research administration, business (research) development and educational support to military members and veterans. He was one of the four founders of the Leonard Wood Institute which is a Missouri-based 501 (c) 3 non-profit formed in 2004 by state led technology, economic development and business organizations to benefit Fort Leonard Wood, the University of Missouri and the surrounding region with research, development, innovation and partnerships focused on Fort Leonard Wood and technology needs of the U. S. Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence. He served as advisor, liaison and contributor to major projects on geospatial engineering, counter improvised explosives, hydrogen fuel, traumatic brain injury mitigation, sensors and training technologies. An underlying theme of all these efforts was, and continues to be, the strengthening of the technology base that supports the military needs around Fort Leonard Wood. He has experience that includes leading various levels of military organizations and executive level leadership in academia. His career is supported by a bachelor’s degree from West Point in military engineering, a masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and a PhD in Geological Engineering from Missouri S&T. He serves as the president of the National Defense Industry Association for Missouri and Illinois (Great Rivers Chapter) and is a fellow in the Society of American Military Engineers. He teaches as an adjunct professor for graduate engineers in geospatial information systems.
After a career in sales, marketing, product development, and senior management in the instrumentation industry, Tim Comerford formed a consulting business in Cincinnati to assist manufacturers of technical products, with particular emphasis on commercialization of government funded Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects. In Rolla, as Business Director for the Center for Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies (CAMT) at Missouri S&T from 2005 to 2010, he nurtured relationships with regional small businesses involved in Government grant funding for ongoing research.
After earning a BSME from the University of Cincinnati, Tim sold industrial control instrumentation for Honeywell in Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis; then managed process instrumentation marketing for Rosemount (now Emerson Process Management) in Minneapolis and for Foxboro in Boston. A line of process transmitters Tim developed at Rosemount became such an industry game-changer that one now resides in the Smithsonian. Graduate studies in business included MBA programs at St. Louis University and at the University of Minnesota.
